Lions News · Off-Season Practices – A Message from Mr. Turner

Hello Unity Reed Families,

Out of season sports practices will begin on 9/17/2020. We are all excited to reunite our athletes with our coaches and we are happy to be back, however, our number one concern will be the safety of our staff and students. We believe we can provide the opportunity for our students to improve on their social, mental, and physical health by providing the ability to train and practice.  The initial stages of practice will be in the form of conditioning.  As such, equipment will not be part of practices at this time.

Our Unity Reed Staff, and all coaches in Prince William County Public Schools, will be participating in county-level mandated training prior to the beginning of the first practice.  Please note:  Out of season practice sessions are not mandatory for our student athletes.  As student athletes have a choice, our coaches also have a choice whether to participate in practices or not. Feel free to contact your coach for details.

Prior to participating in out of season practice, athletes are required to provide the Athletic Department with a current physical dated on or after May 1, 2020 (a blank physical form can be downloaded from the VHSL website), a signed PWCS concussion training form (ALL STUDENT ATHLETES WILL TAKE ONLINE CONCUSSION TRAINING) https://online-concussion.pwcs.edu/, and a completed blue emergency card. We have ongoing documentation collection on Tuesdays and Thursdays during school hours.

One of our many safety features will be the use of our SportsWare Online Program (SWOL).  This program will be a wonderful tool for our athletes, coaches and trainers.  Student athletes will log in and complete their mandatory daily Covid-19 health screening.  The information provided in this screening each day will help our coaches and staff prior to each practice.

The information entered is not shared outside of Unity Reed High School. The certified athletic trainer is the only person who has access to your medical information. The emergency contact information can be accessed by the athlete’s coach during their respective season only. The SportsWare Software program is HIPPA compliant.

Students and Parents

Students/Parents go to www.swol123.net and register with the student school email address (more information on registering can be found in our Daily Health Screening post).  Once registered it is easy.  Student athletes/parents will fill out the health screen prior to 12 noon, the day of their practice session. Upon arrival at the school, the student shall remain in the car until checked in by SJ Staff. Drop-off area is the front of the school near door #3 and the white storage shed.  Pick-up is around back on the Driver’s Education range. Students must bring a mask and their own filled water bottle. Again, no equipment will be needed for the first few weeks.  ALL coaches will be wearing masks and will place student athletes into Pods of 10.  Each pod will be assigned a coach.  Right now, the coach and the pod will remain the same for the first few weeks. Students will be expected, with the help of their coaches, to social distance a minimum of six feet.  Coaches may allow the students to remove masks in a situation where the students are more than 6 ft apart.  Student athletes should not interact with students from other sessions on property.  For example, students leaving the 5:00 PM session should not interact with students arriving for the 7:00 PM session.

Coaches must provide practice plans to the Athletic Director one week prior to the session(s) being held. Coaches will be responsible for maintaining social distancing of their student-athletes and continued training/reinforcement of safe practices to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Coaches will receive a list of eligible participants daily from the athletic trainer using the daily health screening tool. Student athletes who do not complete the screening tool by noon or at all, will not be permitted to practice that day and will be sent home.  Our focus is: Safety first.

If you have any questions, please contact your coach, or Mr. Turner at turnerkd@pwcs.edu.

We very much look forward to seeing you all back on the field!
